    William Melville - Founder of MI5
    William Mulholland (September 11, 1855 – July 22, 1935) was the head of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Los Angeles inSouthern California. He was responsible for building the water aqueducts and dams that allowed the city to grow into one of the largest in the world.

    An Irish sailor named Walton was shipwrecked in Brittany in 1235 and he settled down to trap birds with a net in an estuary. He held the net steady by fastening it to poles and he noticed that mussels attached themselves to the poles. This was the beginning of the world-famous shell-fish industry in France. Yummy!     Lucy Fitzgerald organized the wives, mothers and daughters into the Company of Santa Barbara in Gerona, Spain when Napoleon invaded. Under heavy fire the company evacuated the injured, passed ammunition and took the places of injured soldiers. The company became a model for other regiments to form their own nursing auxillary organisations.

    Robert Henessy started exporting a brandy after he retired from the Irish Brigade.
    During WW1, Commandant O Byrne conducted a daring submarine raid on the austro-hungarian naval base at Pula along the Adriatic coast at Croatia.
    The Galloping Hogan - Portugal - He held the rear guard after the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 and attacked the English forces in Limerick at night, thus allowing the treaty to come into play. He joined the Irish Brigade in France, fought in battles at Flanders but had to resign after a duel with another Irishman. The king suggested that he go to Portugal where King Joao could use him. He used his guerrilla tactics and night time horse raids to good effect here too.He lead a brigade of Portuguese soldiers which held off an invading Spanish force.

    Peter de Lacy, one of the Wild Geese. He served with the Irish Brigade in France, then moved to Poland where he met Czar Peter the Great of Russia. He went to Russia to train the army in modern European warfare. The army were not impressed with de Lacy so he only managed a battalion of nobles - the Grand Musketeers. This battallion eventually defeated the Swedish army and the russians began to take notice of DE Lacy now that he was a field marshall

    Fearghall, Irish monk who became Bishop of Salzburg in 784AD. He preached that there were people at the other side of the world who had souls and who had never heard of Christ. This was heresy, according to the Anglo-Saxon papal legate, Boniface. He was put on trial but he argued his case and won.

    The Battle of Fontenoy (1744), the only major engagement when all the Irish Regiments were used in the field. They were kept in reserve and let loose when the English were gaining the upper hand. They were eventually sent against the Coldstream Guards and forced them back, turning the tide of the battle around. When George 11 heard the news he muttered " Accursed the laws which deprive me of such subjects".
